"The color red. Like a drop and a slit from the blood and markings around your body is what you see on the people we are going to kill end countless lives simempre. (cackles evilly) And my rough revenge will finally bloom like red roses." ― Montero de León
Montero de León (real name Khuno Than) is the main antagonist of Disney's upcoming animated feature film The Skipper. Long ago, he was the originally the High Priest from the Ancient Lost City of Qocha Mayu, until he was exile and joined forces with the conquistadors where he would drink from the fountain of youth and has been alive for hundreds of years, till he became a billionaire of his own submarine and intends to find the lost city to seek revenge by following the tour guide Almas Santino and the Montana family through the Amazon river without being noticed.
Background[]
Many years ago, Khuno Than was the High Priest of the Lost City in the Amazon rainforest who used dark magic and attempted to make human sacrifices in order to seize more power from the gods. But the great chief of their people stood up to the murderous priest and had him banished for treason, which was clearly the only way to keep everyone safe from being harmed, despite they've never been harmed before, but only got worse when Khuno Than attempted to murder them for power. Khuno Than would soon come face-to-face with the conquistadors who were trying to find the lost city to eliminate all the natives as they were pronounced as savages, only to find Khuno Tan as the last of them to exist, and attempted to have him used as a slave without having more natives to kill. Their leader, Hernán Cortés had an idea for the former to join forces with them on conquering many places in order to avoid spending rest of his life as a slave and being executed.
After becoming one of the Rodeleros, Khuno Than assisted them on capturing and enslaving people in Spain, until he found the Fountain of Youth, and with one sip of it, Khuno Tan seized immortally and has been living for hundreds of years, changing his name into Montero de León to hide his true identity and backstory, thus becoming a wealthy submarine owner and hired many mercenaries to serve him, including his butler, Esteban, Xiomara and the Aguirre Brothers. For years, de León attempted to seek revenge on his people for banishing him, without knowing it was the right thing to do, and spend a long time checking in on maps and books to prepare for his long-awaited coup d’état.
Development[]
Montero de León was originally going to be a regular and muscular brute known as Cayetano Sanchez who was a billionaire and owner of a submarine, but not a 400 years old high priest or a conquistador, and was originally going to be voiced by Javier Bardem, thus making the character inspired and similar to Governor Ratcliffe from the 1995 film Pocahontas. Benajmin Bratt was later set to voice the character, due to his role as Eduardo Perez/El Macho in Despicable Me 2 and Ernesto de la Cruz in Coco, however, Bratt would later go on voicing Efraim Santino, father of the film's protagonist, Almas Santino.
In the end, De León got similarities with Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine from The Adventures of Tintin, as the one from the comics was only a normal ship collector while the film version of Sakharine was main villain, De León shares the same outfits with him as he wore a long nipped coat and carried his cane which happened to be a sword inside.
Personality[]
As the High Priest of his people and home, Khuno Than was already blood-thirsty towards people, and manipulated them into thinking that the gods are speaking to them, and offered them to be sacrificed unless they would want to speak to them to, and lied that the same thing has happened to him before, therefore he was only seizing power for himself rather than helping out people who needed food and water to survive. Khuno Than was also very powerful when he lifted a spirit of dark magic and used it against innocent people and endangered them all. Therefore, during his attempt to sacrifice one of his people, he was banished for a treason and cowardly attempted to reason with its loyal and protective chief, to no avail.
Before becoming a soldier trained by the legendary Hernán Cortés, Khuno Than faced the fact of slavery as it was what he deserved for his actions against his own people, with the conquistadors not knowing that he was a power-hungry and tyrannical sorcerer. To avoid more slavery, including a sudden death, Khuno Than would join forces with the people of Spain who tried to eliminate his people as well, which what he would have done by joining them as well if the soldiers ever found more natives rather than one who was taken under their custody. So Khuno Than was trained to become a ruthless and merciless soldier, and learned how they would kill and execute other slaves and prisoners.
When Khuno Than found the Fountain of Youth and drank from it, he realized he seized immortally and still had the chance of finding Qocha Mayu and seek revenge on his people for not understanding how it felt like for someone like him to get power from the gods by getting rid of a person, thus meaning he went on a revenge path, and was never going to stop doing an attempted murder on his people for "betraying" him, and renamed himself Montero de León, so no one could find the truth about him, like when he went on selling weapons illegally to the world and bought himself a giant submarine to fill it with people who will go under his order.
Montero de León is the self-proved to be the most powerful man in all of Spain.
